Free Innovative Reading Program Teacher’s Lounge Welcome to Read 1000 Science Stories. Each day we search the web to bring your students three short science stories that can be read in 6-minutes. They range from the newest discoveries to the weird and fun, whatever will inspire a student’s curiosity because we believe that eagerness stimulates learning, which increases intelligence! How The Program Will Help Your Students 1) Reading wide slices of science teaches students how science permeates all fields of knowledge and impacts our daily lives. 2) While our program is not targeted at national tests, it will get your students excited about science. Excited students learn better. 3) Daily reading molds students’ brains to effortlessly pick up an amazing amount of useful knowledge, which can translate their thinking into using science throughout their life. 4) Studies show that a large percentage of students lose their love of science after they leave elementary school, so we seek to keep science fun. All kids (and adults) like to keep score. Counting the stories they read is both fun, and substantiates to them how much progress they are making as a scholar. 5) Achieving awards for reading 100, 300, 600, and 1000 stories demands setting a long term goal. Success in life is largely determined by teaching students to select and accomplish long term goals. 6) Motivating students in the bottom percentiles is one of the biggest difficulties a teacher faces. We have carefully crafted our program so that every single student can equally thrive by leaving merit or test based awards to other programs. Our participatory rewards can build all students’ science esteem. After all, even the worst student in your class will grow up to vote. They may even be a politician! The original material on our site about lifesaving scientists is also reviewed for accuracy. Much of our site’s material has been written by accredited science journalists. We do accept submitted writings as well, but unlike Wikipedia all articles are reviewed and no articles are put up anonymously. How To Get Started 1) The easiest way to begin is for you to register as a Teacher on our site. You can then enter your classes and students using our easy interface. Click HERE to begin the process of becoming a Teacher on our site. All of the login information for your students is created automatically by our system. No personal information is needed on any of your students. Some information is collected to identify you as a Teacher during the initial request. Contact Us if you have any questions or problems. If you have students younger than 13 years old, certain restrictions apply due to a federal law known as COPPA. You can read about it here: http://www.coppa.org/ 2) You may still register all your students if some are under the age of 13 as long as you comply with COPPA’s rules. In general, if your school has obtained parental permission based on COPPA’s rules for students to use websites, then you can sign up your students by using THIS link. But sometimes information for prizes may be collected temporarily. Any student aged 13 or over can register on the website simply by creating a user name and password (we don’t want their real names - anonymity protects your students’ privacy). Those under the age of 13 will need their parent’s permission. The site will automatically send an email to their parents, asking for approval. 4) Or you can bypass our registering system by printing the manual counting form we provide. Or you can create your own program. Then you and each student can track the science stories they read, rather than have us count them. Teacher Worksheets The Best Part of Teaching – Granting Awards Once a registered user has read 100, 300, 600 or 1,000 stories, they are eligible for awards. The beautiful award certificates were designed by our artist, Jeremy Mauney. You can freely download and print them as award certificates that the student’s can proudly take home. Also available are T-shirts and Posters in our store citing the accomplishment, although they are not free. More Fun Teaching Tools Have time to fill?
